How Many Sessions Might I Need?
For physiotherapy the total number of sessions is usually 3-6 sessions but it is dependant on each injury and varies dependant on the injury diagnosis and healing timeframes. The severity of pain, duration of the symptoms to date as well as age and other relevant medical history also affect recovery timeframes. We will explain the diagnosis, estimated timeframe and management options to you at the first and subsequent sessions.
For massage the total number of sessions depends mostly on whether you are coming for a muscle injury or pain, in which case it is likely similar to physiotherapy above. If you are coming for muscle tension, stress relief and general well being then sessions can be as and when needed, or a regular appointment usually 4 or 6 weekly to prevent build up of tension to help supplement a suitable stretching, mobility and flexibility regime.
For shockwave the current evidence strongly recommends 3 sessions - ideally weekly to maximum fortnightly (the first 3 sessions in a 3-6 week time period) initially to accelerate healing, reduce pain and improve function and ensure a positive treatment outcome. The total number of sessions will vary between 3-6 in total depending on injury and progression of symptoms.
In some chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis it may be beneficial to have "top up" sessions as required to help reduce pain and improve function. This could be monthly, 6 weekly or as and when required if the pain becomes more acute.
