About TMJ Physiotherapy
What is TMJ Physiotherapy?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a much more common condition than you might think. 29% of the European population will have some symptoms or dysfunction, but out of those not everyone will have pain, restrictions or day to day impairments.
For those that do have pain and symptoms it can effect eating and chewing, jaw opening, jaw clicking, speaking, yawning, swallowing and related headaches, ear symptoms, neck range of motion and pain, teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism).

How Does it Work?
We offer a range of treatments to relieve symptoms from extra-oral and intra-oral massage techniques, jaw manual therapy, mobilisations, exercises and acupuncture as appropriate around the jaw.
We also address related neck and shoulder dysfunction, referred headaches and associated secondary pain linked to the jaw as a holistic, comprehensive treatment plan.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions you will need varies greatly depending on many factors including severity, duration of symptoms, cause of the pain, complexity and adherence to the home exercise and advice.
Each session is discussed on a case by case basis but on average it would require around 3-5 sessions over 2-4 months to enable enough time to alleviate pain, progressively strengthen, change behavioural habits and desensitise irritable areas.
